MY GUIDING PHILOSOPHY: EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED, MAINTAIN SOME SORT OF BALANCE,
PUSH HARD AGAINST ADVERSE WINDS, AND DON'T TAKE YOURSELF TOO SERIOUSLY.

Veronica's 8th Birthday: Laser Tag!

VERONICA'S 8th birthday was held at a Laser Tag Arcade near Winchester.

You are never too young and never too old to play LASER TAG! Max was the youngest at 5 and Gramps (me) was definitely the oldest at 71.

The birthday guests, adults and kids, were split into two teams--Red Team and Blue Team.  I was on the Red Team with Erik, Gerry, several other adults, Yael, Olivia and other children.  Here we are at our Red Home Base where your vests are charged and have to be re-charged after you have shot about 150 laser rounds (which happens very quickly)!

Jose, Patricia, Adrian, Elyse, Veronica, Max and other children were on the Blue Team.  Here they are at their Blue Home Base, charging up.

The one golden rule is NO RUNNING!  It is quite dark in there and the thought of large adults hurtling into small children (and vice versa!) was not good.  I am pleased to report that everyone obeyed the golden rule and survived the experience.  As it turned out, furtive movement was a better strategy.

All the photos in this blog were taken by REGEE who was allowed in to record all the destruction!

All of you wear a laser vest which, if you are not careful, can get you shot in the front, the back and on both shoulders! You can see Erik below all suited up in his laser vest.  If you shoot the front or back of the vest you get 50 points.  If you shoot the shoulders (more difficult when everyone is on the move), you get 100 points.

The basic idea is to leave your home area (Red or Blue), find your way through a confusing neon-lit maze into enemy territory, and then try to shoot at their Home Base sign which can give you 500 points for every accurate laser shot.

The downside of this is that while you are shooting at their Home Base sign, the enemy can creep up on you and shoot you--usually in the back!  As you can see above, Erik has penetrated the Blue Team's territory and is zapping their Home Base sign for 500 points per shot.  BUT, Veronica has crept up on him and is shooting him in the back and the shoulders for 50 or 100 points a shot!!

And while creeping around in enemy territory, you sometimes bump into the enemy and then savage laser fights ensue with green beams scoring points as you get shot up.  Above you can see that Veronica and I bumped into each other when she was in Red enemy territory.  She had no hesitation in shooting her poor old Gramps full of laser rays!!  And, of course, I had no option but to return fire.

She made me use up a lot of ammo and when I finally got to the Blue Home Base sign, I only had a few laser rounds left.  Then you have to go back to your own Red Home Base to re-charge.  Very frustrating.  War is hell.

I also bumped into Jose when I had penetrated Blue enemy territory and we had a battle.  It was a different version of the King and I--but no music this time as "I" got lasered!

Here is Max coming up one of the many ramps, firing away at me as I enter Blue territory.

You can see the very efficient laser "gun" in this shot as I take a few shots at the photographer!

In the end, the Red Team won with a score of over 300,000 points.  Every player also gets an individual score sheet showing how many points you got, who shot you, and how many points they scored against you individually.  I think my final score was about 35,000 points--but who's counting?

After it was all over, there were no hard feelings and Veronica and friends were all excited to get into their pizzas and Harry Potter-themed birthday cake.

A good time was had by all.
