MY GUIDING PHILOSOPHY: EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED, MAINTAIN SOME SORT OF BALANCE,
PUSH HARD AGAINST ADVERSE WINDS, AND DON'T TAKE YOURSELF TOO SERIOUSLY.

We Love the King!

Last Wednesday we visited a Photo Exhibition entitled "In Remembrance of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej"at the Bangkok Arts and Cultural Centre (BACC).  Almost 90 photos were on display on the top three circular floors of the BACC.

The photos depict the life of the King, auspicious occasions during his long reign, and the many projects and good works that he carried out for the rural poor.  This one was my favorite because it expresses in a very simple way the genuine love the Thai people felt for their King.  We tried to find this T-shirt for Jose but, alas, it was not on sale.

The BACC reminds you of the Guggenheim Museum in New York and it is a great venue for an exhibition of this sort.  The most dramatic "photo" is actually a huge collage of photos of the King which forms a stunning portrait of him in a Chuck Close sort of way.

I did not know that the King himself was a big camera buff but there were a number of photos of him wielding a large camera.  This photo shows the King as a young man when he first took up photography.

Along with most Thais, we were all dressed in black or dark colors as a sign of respect and many of the shops and streets displayed huge photos of the King.  Here is a photo in the exhibition of a store that had a large collection of photos of the King.

And here is a drive by photo of a store that I took that also stocked a lot of the King's photos and portraits!

Wherever you look in Bangkok, you will see images of the King.  At the airport there was one of the tallest and longest billboards I have ever seen in my life.  I was so overawed that I forgot to take a photo.  But I did catch this one in the airport.

Here is one last photo of the King waving to his subjects that seemed to capture his regal air but also his quiet charm and humility.

Well, almost the last one.  We love the King!
