MY GUIDING PHILOSOPHY: EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED, MAINTAIN SOME SORT OF BALANCE,
PUSH HARD AGAINST ADVERSE WINDS, AND DON'T TAKE YOURSELF TOO SERIOUSLY.

Eagle Eyes

I was walking along the C&O Canal early this morning when a Bald Eagle landed about 50 feet ahead of me.  I don’t know whether it was male or female; but unless someone tells me otherwise, I’ll assume it was a female.  She is one of two nesting pairs who live about two miles away from the Anglers Inn car park.

She sat looking at me for a moment, slightly cocking her head, contemplating what to do next.  She must have decided that I was after her rat!  She lifted off slowly and deliberately with one or two beats of her powerful wings.  She headed for the trees, and then swooped down towards the muddy waters of the Potomac River which was in flood.

I lost sight of her after that and only wish that I had been a bit quicker with my camera--I did not get the telephoto fully extended in my haste.  The photos are a bit blurry but you get the general idea. Luckily, there was nobody else around so she seemed to be quite calm and unhurried.  Besides, this was her home territory and I was the intruder.  Isn't she a beauty?
