Some three years ago, Regee wound a whole bunch of Christmas lights around my prized Japanese Maple tree in the front garden. They looked spectacular. Indeed, they looked so good that we just left them there and, sure enough, they lit up again last Christmas. I plugged them in yet again this Christmas but nothing happened. I examined all 3, 313 small bulbs but they all looked in good order.
No, the real problem was that the tree, being a tree, had continued to grow and had begun to embalm and incorporate the lights into its trunk and branches! Yikes. If you look carefully on the right, you will see that this Japanese Maple now has unique patterning on its branches.
Ah well. I managed to cut most of the wires and remove the offending lights. However, one Christmas light remans embedded for all time as a reminder that Mother Nature is in charge down here, not Man or, surprisingly, Woman either. If this light ever glows in the dark, we will know that everything on Planet Earth is truly interconnected and that we mess with trees, oceans and climate at our own peril. Lesson learned.
