My friend, Rich Schatz, sent me this photo of elk grazing on his neighbor’s lawn at (frozen) Bussard Lake in Washington State where he lives. Bussard Lake is the starting point for all our annual road trips but, unfortunately, we don’t usually get there until May or even July so the elk are not so bold or apparent by then.
During winter, Rich has also seen bears around the lake and other wildlife that is drawn to any food source that is not under snow--including the front lawn and your garden!
Rich, Wayne Rusch and I will be meeting up at Bussard Lake again this year in May. We plan to do some local road trips so that we can visit some of the great fishing lakes in and around the Bussard Lake area like Waitts and, especially, Brown (where we might camp for a few days).
It would appear that Wayne and I will also be helping to build a cabin on the shores of Bussard Lake that Rich's sister, Linda, has commissioned and which might also serve as a guest house from time to time (hint hint)! In any event, I am not sure that I should be let loose anywhere near a construction project but I have told Rich that I am a competent painter, if not a master carpenter. Time will tell.
