The Fish Days of Summer

The Romans referred to the "dog days" as dies caniculares, covering the forty days between the first week of July and the second week of August.  This was when the dog star Sirius was in the ascendant.

When we hear about "the dog days of summer" we conjure up the enervating effects of a long hot July and August.  But if you get out onto Chesapeake Bay during this time, the breezes are cool, the skies are blue and the fish are jumping.  These are indeed "the fish days of summer".  Here is just one of those days with Nikolai and Gennady when we caught over 60 beautiful fish--Spot, Croaker and Spanish Mackerel.
Gennady makes exceptional sushi and Captain Soubbotin allowed him to bring some aboard--even though it is supposedly bad luck to bring fish on board from the land.  Anyway, the presence of sushi did not seem to deter our fishy friends that day.  Here is Gennady fondly gazing at his culinary artistry.  Washed down with some of Nikolai's best Scotch (Glen Garioch), the day became even more wonderful.

We were out on the Bay for about 6 hours.  Yes, we catch fish but we also talk, philosophize, jump overboard for a swim and enjoy the spiritual essence of the whole experience--and I am not referring to the Scotch!

Captain Soubbotin and his First Mate heading home as the sun sets on another wonderful "fish day of summer".  And the good news is that we will soon begin our winter fishing--when the Big Boyz come back in from the ocean after their summer vacation around the globe.
