Brunch at Maharlika

Yesterday we went for brunch at Maharlika, a new Filipino restaurant in the East Village.  Here are a few photos of the various dishes we ordered.  You could not have a better brunch--we did not eat again until 9PM.  And I also discovered an amazing IPA--Lagunitas from California.  Try it!

Arroz Caldo always tastes amazing when you are feeling under the weather.  But when you are in fine health it blows your mind and sends your taste buds crazy--i.e. you want MORE!

Check out the New York Times review of this restaurant at:

The Tagalog take on Eggs Benedict--Itlog Benigno!  But here the delicately poached eggs sit on warm pandesal and SPAM with a kalamansi hollandaise.  The salad cancel out those sinful home fries.

Tortang Talong--an eggplant torte.  The eggplant has been grilled first and then blended into the omelette which now has a delicious smoky taste.  Chef Regee makes also makes the best tortang talong.

Naturally, there has to be fried chicken somewhere on the menu--but this one comes on an ube (purple yam) waffle.  Bet the Belgians never thought about that one!

Longanisa (pork sauasage), pritong itlog (fried egg) on sinangag (a bed of fried rice).  That's quite a mouthful so the dish is called Longsilog.

And last but not least, pork tocino (cured and fried pork).  The best tocino is said to come from the province of Pampanga.  Looks like the province of New York can make pretty good tocino as well.
